Jimmy Rambone was an avid outdoorsman and hunter who lived in Foster, Rhode Island with his girlfriend.
‘In early September 2003 Jimmy booked a trip with Canadadventures to travel to Kuujjuaq, east of Kuujjuarapik in Nunavik for an unguided caribou hunt. He was staying at a location called Camp Sardine near the Caniapiscau River and was transported to the site in a Beaver aircraft.’
They were four hunters staying at the camp. On the morning of September 3, 2003 the hunters headed out and Jimmy wanted to hunt alone. This is not uncommon considering he was an experienced hunter and proficient with his rifle. Jimmy was also epileptic.
Early on in the hunt, the other hunters heard two shots and thought Jimmy must’ve killed a caribou. They carried on through the day and returned to the camp for lunch. Jimmy did not return. At 2 pm, the hunters became concerned and at 3pm, they set out to look for him and found the location where the caribou was killed, but there was no sign of Jimmy.
‘The scene of the shooting was almost surreal. Jimmy’s bright-orange hunting vest was hanging thirty feet from the carcass along with his camera. Jimmy and his rifle were gone.’ - David Paulildes
On September 4, more personnel arrived to start the search and rescue effort. They sent a Beaver aircraft into the air to fly over the area. Local police force and the SQ joined the search with a canine, but the dog could not pick up a scent. There were no footprints in the snow around the scene of the caribou carcass.
Rescuers speaking to Pam (Jimmy’s girlfriend):
‘The most vicious and dangerous animals are polar bears and wolves. They (rescuers) explained that these animals might possibly attack a human, but they’d also eat the carcass of the caribou and they wouldn’t take the rifle, which was never found. There was never a location found that could be attributed to an attack on a human.’
Jimmy has never been found.
