The Different Names for Bigfoot
Wild Men have been given a variety of names throughout Indigenous cultures and regions around the world. The term ‘Bigfoot’ originated when Jerry Crew, a logger in Humbolt County, California found large 16-inch human footprints in the Bluff Creek area in 1958. Reporter Andrew Genzoli of the Humbolt Times published the story about the mysterious huge footprints and plaster cast. In follow-up articles he gave the mysterious creature the name ‘Bigfoot’, and the term was coined.
The term Sasquatch originates from the word Sasq’ets in Salish meaning ‘Wild Man’ or ‘Hairy Man’. JW Burns later derived the term Sasquatch from Sasq’ets in the 1930’s. Burns was a Native agent assigned to the Chehalis band. The Sts’ailes First Nation had a close bond with the Sasq’ets, and believed they had the ability to move between the physical and spiritual realms.
